Urban calm at Folklore hair salon

folklore hair salon new orleans

New Orleans is a lot of things, but it's not exactly hip. Antebellum mansions, classic cocktails and Mardi Gras balls usually spring to mind.  When you step into Folklore Salon, you instantly get the feeling that somehow, maybe, New Orleans is cool.

My friend Nicole opened the Freret Street location with her business partner Agnes in March. It's simple, clean, airy and inviting.

Each mirror is surrounded by air plants in geometric planters, the seating areas feature clear lucite chairs atop warm woven rugs and towering white walls contrast perfectly with stained concrete floors.  Topping off the entire design are four stunning large-scale oil paintings by New Orleans artist Craig Berthold.

If you're in town, stop in for a cut and color.  You just might walk out feeling a little more hip.

International Instagrams: Inspiration from a World Traveler

Yves Saint Laurent Gardens My sister-in-law Jessica is one of the most talented, beautiful, funny and all-around interesting people I know.  She is the lead stylist and owner of an amazing salon in San Diego called Paper Doll. But when Jessica's businesswoman hat comes off, she keeps busy adding stamps to her passport.

Jessica is a hair and makeup artist for prAna clothing company.  It takes her to some of the most beautiful, inspiring and peaceful setting around the world.  Inevitably, I find myself drooling over her instagrams, anxiously awaiting new posts from every trip.  Jess' latest travels landed her in Morocco, where the blue and white hues would brighten even the gloomiest of days.

I hope you enjoy her inspiration as much as I do!

Fashion Friday: Flower Headbands and Floral Crowns for Festival Season

Courtesy: Callina Marie Festival season is upon us and there's no hotter accessory than flowers for your hair, thanks in large part to music and fashion muse Lana Del Rey. Whether you go for a headband or crown, bold buds or a simple twist, the floral touch is a perfect accent for your festival attire!  Last summer, my beautiful and talented sister-in-law put this trend to the test at her California wedding, with smaller crowns for the bridesmaids and large white roses for her.  As the lead stylist and owner of Paper Doll Salon, she knows a thing or two about pulling off trends and the result was stunning. Here are some of my favorite looks, along with some additional links and DIY resources if you feel adventurous enough to make one yourself!
